Perico

Percy + Nico = Perico

When Did Nico Fall In Love With Percy?

That is a question I would like to ask the author, Rick Riordhan.  In his FAQ, RR says that as he did not begin with an agenda, as he wrote Nico's sexuality slowly became apparent.  When, whilst writing which book?

I have re-read the books and as a reader I can see the sexuality and the attraction to Percy seem to fit perfectly with all that went before.  Across the web others are saying it too, some were saying it before House of Hades was published.  I think that by the time Son of Neptune is being written RR may have decided on Nico's gay character development and there is nothing in the previous books to suggest Nico was not gay.  Nico's feelings for Percy must have developed over some time, I think perhaps he fell in love with him towards the end of Battle of the Labrynth or through the time of the Last Olympian books 4 & 5.

The first 5 books of the Percy Jackson series
Nico enters the story aged 10, when rescued by Percy in book 3.

At the end of book 4 Nico visits Percy and this could be the start of a proper friendship.

Short Story between book 4 and 5 - Sword of Hades - Nico and Percy on yet another little adventure together.

In the 5th book Percy and Nico spend a great deal of time together.  Nico has matured greatly.  At one point Nico has to choose between loyalty to his father or Percy and he chooses Percy: this may be because Nico believes his own plan is the best for saving the world and that requires Percy.

Heroes of Olympus
The Lost Hero - Percy & Nico are not in this book

Son of Neptune - Nico says positive things about Percy to Hazel.  He is pleased, delighted even that his sister supports Percy in Chapter 7 and seems to enjoy being with Percy but avoids Percy because of Percy's questions.

Mark of Athena - Nico makes only a small appearance in this book.  We read that Annabeth thinks Nico may have had a crush on her, this links completely to the continuation of the story in the next book.  Was Annabeth right? We never heard her PoV in the first series but there is nothing from Percy's PoV to suggest that.  Actually we know that Nico spent very little time with Annabeth.

House of Hades - Nico is not eating, that classic symptom of a love sick teenager!  Plus everything else that goes on in this book.

PERICO - is there a future?

If it were real life I would think not.  People usually move on from their first loves.  Percy and Annabeth will split up and all of them will meet someone new.

As it is children's fiction I do not think Percy and Annabeth will split up.

If Nico were my son I would be saying the same as I would tell Leo (the other 14 year old boy without a girlfriend) you are young and you will meet the right person in time, you probably ust have not met him or her yet.

Percy is not gay.  So far in the books Percy seems to be totally heterosexual so I would not expect that to suddenly change.

I would hope for a happy ending for Nico.
